WordPress Backup Plugins

Applies to:
WordPress Hosting

Introduction

Your WordPress Hosting is backed up daily by 34SP.com, however we always recommend that you take your own backups. The following plugins and services have been tested by 34SP.com staff. This is not an exhaustive list of WordPress plugins and services that can back your site up.

Tips for backing up your site

You don’t need to backup the /wp/ folder this is a copy of WordPress, and in the event of a disaster can be re-downloaded from WordPress.org.

Make sure your backup solution backups your database this will normally be stored as a .sql file within your backup folder.

Test your backups, open the folder and check the files are there. Use a staging site to reupload the files and see if the site still works.

Hosted Services

CodeGuard [Free/Premium]

Successfully backups and restores, using their WordPress Plugin, the service stores the backups on their servers.

VaultPress [Premium]

Successful backups to their remote servers, using their WordPress Plugin.

Backup plugins known to work

BackWPup [Free & Premium]

Backups as expected, however it backups the wp-content folder twice. Consequently the backups are nearly twice the size. There is no settings to exclude a given folder.

WP All Backup [Free & Premium]

Manual Backups and scheduled backups work fine, though we do recommend excluding the /wp/ folder via the settings.

BackupWordPress [Free]

Backup from this plugin, click exclude on the backup options and exclude the wp/ folder.

iThemes BackupBuddy [Premium]

Backup and restore using the plugin. To safely backup and restore files.

Within BackupBuddy settings File & Directory Defaults the WP/ folder contents need to be excluded.

Backup plugins known to have issues

Updraft Plus [Free & Premium]

While manual backups do correctly work. Updraft plus automated backups fail leaving cron entries in the DB. Over time these build up and can cause instability to your site. We recommend disabling Updraft Plus.

Backup Scheduler [Free]

Doesn’t appear to do a manual backup, and just sits there.

Duplicator [Free & Premium]

The Free version tries to add a folder /wp-snapshots in the wp/ folder and fails due to incorrect permissions.
