This is a quick step-by-step guide to using FTP with 34SP.com hosting accounts. FTP can be used to transfer files from your local machine to your server (or vice-versa), and is commonly used as a way of uploading your website's file.
If you do not have an FTP client installed on your computer we recommend FileZilla, which is a free application available on both Windows and Mac.
How to install FileZilla
Before getting started with FTP, you'll need to install an FTP client on your computer.
If you do not have an FTP client on your computer, we recommend downloading FileZilla.
If you already have an FTP client installed on your machine, please skip to the section 'How to connect to your server'.
When the file has downloaded, locate and run it to launch the install wizard.
Follow the onscreen instructions, making sure to select the 'No, I don't want a free upgrade' option when offered free upgrades or additional services/products.
When the installation is complete, make sure the checkbox labelled 'Start FileZilla now' is checked, and then click the button labelled 'Finish'.
How to connect to your server
In order to keep your website files safe, 34SP.com locks FTP access to your server at midnight every night. It is therefore essential you unlock your FTP access before you begin to transfer your files. This can be done via the 34SP.com Control Panel, details on how to do it can be found in our KB article 'How to lock and unlock FTP access'.
Once FTP is unlocked, you will need to configure FileZilla so that it can connect to your server.
Firstly, click on the 'Open the Site Manager' icon, located at the top left corner of the application.
This will open the 'Site Manager' dialog window. Simply click the button labelled 'New Site', and enter the name of your site (we recommend using the website's domain name as a name).
Enter your FTP details
After adding a new site, you then need to enter your server's FTP connection details.
Simply enter the following detail:
'Host' will be your server's IP address, for example '220.127.116.11'. If you aren't sure of your server's IP address, see our KB article 'How to view your hosting account details'.
'Port' should be set to '21'.
'Protocol' should be set to 'FTP'.
Set the 'Logon Type' to 'Normal' and then enter your FTP username and password in the fields provided.
If you do not know your FTP username or password, you can edit or add new users via the 34SP.com Control Panel. For details on how to manage your FTP users, please read our KB article 'How to manage your FTP access details'.
When you are satisfied the correct details have been entered, click the button labelled 'Connect' to connect to your server.
How to transfer your files
Transfer your files
After connecting to your server, FileZilla will split into 2 panes. The left hand pane is a file browser for the computer you are currently using. The pane on the right is a file browser for your server.
To move files from your computer to your server, simply locate the files using the file browser provided, then click-and-drag them over the right hand pane. The selected files will then be transferred to your server. This process works both ways, meaning you can click-and-drag files from your server (the right hand pane) and copy them across to your computer too.
