I have another problem though. With these .ftpaccess files we are advised to use the enum range if we are not on a static IP address. This seemed reasonable but my ISP’s enum ranges seem to change with great frequency so this whole approach is not going to be very reliable for me.

So, I’ve been wishing I could just turn OFF ftp access until I need it. And that is what I have decided to do, like this.

1. Create an .ftpaccess file as above but leaving only ‘Deny all’ in the file, no other valid IP addresses and put it in the appropriate directories (httpdocs, httpsdocs and cgi-bin)

2. Using Plesk file manager, change the permissions on the .ftpaccess file to what I think is called 644 or rw- r– r– (which seems to be generally recommended for .htaccess files as a secure permission setting)

3. If I want to FTP to the site I first go in to Plesk file manager and move the .ftpaccess file to a special purpose built directory called ftp-off

4. Do whatever FTPing I need to do

5. Go back into Plesk and move the .ftpaccess file into httpdocs (I move the file rather than rename it to retain the permissions settings)

SFTP authentication can be augmented with public key authentication or even smartcards to reduce the lingering problem of weak passwords. I’m not sure if your service is designed to allow that or not. If it is OpenSSH based, there should be a way.

What is odd is that the domains of mine that were altered had either never been logged into or if they were it was a very very long time ago. Those that are regularly accessed (and whose details a keylogger would have picked up) were not touched.

The price was always higher (//8 rather than /12) to cover the additional credit card fees of monthly billing.

As for the server configuration. Drop us an email to support and we will happily look at what you need changing. The pro hosting is very new, and running of some very new and complex hardware. The level of sophistication involved is far higher than the personal accounts. We are aiming for a substantially more powerful and reliable system with massively less downtime.

There may be a few minor bugs left to iron out, but that is the nature of any new service. Just let us know any issue and we will have it fixed ASAP for you.

We do still feel that the Professional hosting represents really great value. The account costs less than 15pence per day, and comes with everything you might need to run a succesful website.

Don’t forget there is no minimum contract either, so you can host your site for as little or as long as you need.

The older personal hosting was simply not meeting our customers needs. Uptake was very low, and general feedback indicated it had many flaws.

If you compare the new professional hosting account to other leading UK hosts, it is the equal, if not better of the competing packages.

David – The idea of ham/spam_learn is not meant to be auto it is meant for you the user to do it manually, if you are relying on auto filters to do this for you its not really getting the desired result as you could automatically copy incorrect mails into folders without realising. In time we will also be moving to ‘atmail’ as a server solution as well this has its own spamfiltering system built directly into the same webadmin interface and is much simpler to use than the current SpamGuardian implementation. Spam Accounts will be among the first to move over to it.

We have some more things we want to get active on the atmail cluster before going ahead and moving people over to it.

How to you set up email filters for your ham_learn and junk_learn folders. The email filters on the new webmail do not allow wildcard entries so difficult to see how this can be done?

i have a few issues with opening email, seems to lag out a bit, giving me a blank white screen
( same thing happens at work and at home so not ISP related )

but part from that its great,
easy to use,
easy to import contacts from horde
and i am already adding it to my reseller packages for my clients to use

IMP’s okay, but it’s strengths are the Horde framework to provide all the Groupware/PIM stuff which obviously doesn’t get used here. I like SquirrelMail but it’s a bit minimalist if your used to IMP/the Horde framework.

I have experience of some other companies doing webhosting, and you are way better… cos you guys know what you are doing, you know what your customers want and you obviously care (ie you’re not in it to just rip people off).

I’d be right disappointed if you got taken over by some aggregator…

How about a more obvious way of accessing ‘Plesk’ … I have been looking on your website for ten minutes, and all the wonderful tutorials on how to use Plesk don’t mention how to acess/find this interface from which to administer the website!

I did have a play with it the other day though, feel free to call me old fashioned, but I think I prefer Horde. The full Atmail interface appears to be cluttered and confusing. I didn’t have chance to try the other interfaces fully – I might like those better.

Any reason why you’re not switching to roundcube? It’s very similar to @mail and it’s OpenSource – definately worth a look!

I would have preferred to keep the site with you, as all my other sites are on shared hosting at 34sp, and I have been quite happy with both hosting and customer service.

I have only just this month switched to a reseller and the decision was marginal but done for convenience and future growth. I certainly would not need to have taken the plunge to reorganise everything if I had known I would be able to have just had this upgrade of some existing personal accounts.

That is the level I have always enjoyed simply by being intelligent with my mailboxes. People should never use a catch all address, use unusual mailbox names (not admin, owner, etc) and never publish their account addresses on public sites, then they would not find spam such a problem to begin with.
